For the first time in several years, Comcast plans a broad rate increase for Portland-area basic cable TV subscribers.

The amount of the increase varies from just a few percentage points in many places to nearly 10 percent in some parts of the Portland area. Most basic cable subscribers will pay a couple dollars extra a month beginning July 1; a few will pay slightly less than they are paying now.

Comcast raised rates twice last year for its expanded cable plans, which include sports, movie and news channels. Those rates are not rising now.
