Pacific Seafood back in anti-trust spotlight
In our April issue, reporter Winston Ross identified Pacific Seafood Group as one of the four most secretive companies in Oregon. Ross noted in the story that the seafood giant was apparently trying to conceal its latest acquisition, a Trident Seafoods processing plant in Newport. The Oregonian’s Jeff Manning has more details on that acquisition, as well as a battle brewing between the company and the Department of Justice. Pacific, aiming to purchase another Trident plant, has apparently demanded immunity from future DOJ prosecution connected to that deal. The agency has responded by threatening enforcement action unless Pacific agrees to a series of actions related to the sale and operations of the Trident plant.
Tuition ups and downs
The Higher Education Coordinating Commision greenlighted tuition increases at a few of the state’s smaller universities but nixed steep increases sought by Portland State University and the University of Oregon, the Oregonian reports. The panel approved tuition increases at the Oregon Institute of Technology (7.4 percent), Southern Oregon University (11.4 percent) and Western Oregon University (7.5 percent). It rejected the 8.4 percent boost requested by PSU, and the 11.5 percent pursued by the University of Oregon.
Winners of 2017 Oregon Technology Awards announced
The Technology Association of Oregon announced the winners of the 2017 Oregon Technology Awards during the Oregon Technology Awards ceremony last night. Award winners were announced in the following categories: Pre-Revenue: ScoutSavvy; Emerging: CrowdStreet; Rising Star: Orchestra Software; Growth: DiscoverOrg; Enterprise: FLIR. The event also honored two outstanding leaders. Jill Nelson of Ruby Receptionists clocked in as the 2017 Technology Executive of the Year, and Tinker Hatfield of Nike was the recipient of the organization’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
Legislative update
Portland Business Journal’s Matthew Kish says there is a “glimmer of hope” for a grand legislative bargain this session. Kish reports on the latest efforts to plug the budget hole, pass a transportation package and shore up Medicaid.
