The Oregon Legislature approved the Oregon State Library’s budget for just one year, pending a new plan on how to become more efficient.
That report came out last week, released by Sen. Elizabeth Steiner Hayward and Rep. Nancy Nathanson, and it calls for staffing changes, consolidated services and the end to some programs.
The report addresses “increasing overlap between the missions and responsibilities of the Oregon State Library, the State Archives, the Oregon Historical Society, and the State of Oregon Law Library.” It includes a variety of recommendations, including creating a combined catalog system for all four entities, ending state employee cultural programs and moving federal documents to the archives.
However, perhaps most significantly, the report recommends people’s jobs change, and in some cases, potentially disappear.
