In this issue, we celebrate our 21st annual 100 Best Companies to Work For in Oregon project. The astute and longtime reader will notice a difference in our layout. Instead of compiling a barebones list of the winners, we took a narrative approach, describing a few of the workplace perks and benefits offered by each of the 100 Best companies. The article also features comments from employers and employees who participated in our 100 Best survey. We think this format is more fun to read, easier on the eye and does a better job of capturing the spirit of the 100 Best project.

Our cover also strikes a storytelling note. Oregon Business art director Chris Noble compiled photos of all the 100 Best winners into a lively collage that reflects the diversity of the participating companies, the faces of their employees and the sheer number of people who comprise this slice of the Oregon workforce.

This year 11,186 employees representing 248 companies — including banks, law offices, software firms, consulting firms, printers, manufacturers and many other types of organizations — participated in the 100 Best workplace survey. These employees are the lifeblood of the project, and the companies they work for are an inspiration to everyone who is trying to create a better working environment for Oregonians.

Speaking of putting a human face on the workplace: Art director Chris Noble joined Oregon Business this past January. A Dorset, England, native and a former art director for Snowboarder magazine, he brings a clean, modern design aesthetic and in-house illustrator talent to the magazine, along with a dose of understated British humor to our office. IMG 4651

BD2F2273In January, we also welcomed a new web editor, Jessica Ridgway, a former digital content producer for KTUU Channel 2 News in Anchorage, Alaska who is helping push OregonBusiness.com into the audiovisual age.

On behalf of the Oregon Business staff, I want to thank all the companies who participated in the 100 Best rankings — and issue a heartfelt congratulations to the winners. And if you didn’t participate this year, we hope you will come onboard when we open the competition for 2015. Look for a link to the survey on our website in late August.
