The fifth annual 100 Best Green Companies to Work For in Oregon list showcases exemplary workplaces that inspire and empower workers with a daily and enduring commitment to sustainable practices.

The 100 Best Green Companies were determined by more than 18,000 employees from the 440 companies and nonprofits that took part in two anonymous surveys: the 2013 100 Best Companies and 2012 100 Best Nonprofits projects. As part of the surveys, Oregon workers rated their satisfaction with and the importance of 10 statements related to sustainable practices at their workplaces, such as green mission and goals, recycling and waste reduction, support for public transit, energy and water conservation, and buying local. Then employers were independently scored on 15 questions about their sustainable policies.

The 100 Best project is supervised and conducted by Oregon Business research editor Brandon Sawyer and research partner DHM Research of Portland. Sustainable practices questions were formulated in partnership with The Natural Step USA.

METHODOLOGY

We selected the 2013 100 Best Green Companies based on Sustainable Practices sections in both the employee and employer surveys completed last year by 18,394 employees from 440 for-profit companies and nonprofit organizations. Participation in the 100 Best survey is voluntary and free of charge. Companies needed at least 15 full- or part-time Oregon employees at the time of the survey; nonprofits needed at least 10 employees or qualified volunteers.

Employee survey
For the 2013 survey, Oregon workers rated their satisfaction and importance of 10 statements related to sustainable practices.

Employer benefits survey
Employer representatives also answered 15 questions about their company or nonprofit’s sustainable business practices.

Scoring
The employee survey counted for two-thirds of the overall score, with average employee satisfaction and importance ratings each counting for 100 points. The employer benefits survey is also scored on a 100-point scale, accounting for the other third of the overall score, and resulting in a total possible perfect score of 300 points.

How to enter the 100 Best:

To be considered for the 100 Best Green Companies, employers must sign up for the general 100 Best Companies survey (beginning in August) or the 100 Best Nonprofits survey (beginning in April).

1. Eligibility: Any private or public company with at least 15 Oregon-based employees, or nonprofit or government agency with at least 10 Oregon-based employees (and/or volunteers who volunteer an average of at least 20 hours per month), is eligible to enter. The company or nonprofit may be headquartered outside the state.

2. Survey period: The process for 2013’s list runs August-November 2012 for companies and April-June 2012 for nonprofits. There is no charge to participate, and organizations that do not make the list will remain anonymous. All participants that complete the process can obtain a report of survey results.

3. Submitting your workplace: If your workplace has never entered, send an email with the name, title, phone number and email address of the person who will act as the 100 Best contact to [email protected] or call 503-445-8828. We will email all contacts at the start of each survey.

4. Mark your calendar: The survey sign-up link will also be posted to www.oregon100best.com.
