It’s been a tough road over the past few years in the industry that this Portland company specializes in. But employees here never thought twice about getting through it together, as a team — and they have. They can telecommute 100 percent of the time if they choose, and monthly company meetings have been described as more life therapy sessions than business meetings. Rose City Mortgage also banded together for a weight loss competition last year that donated $5 to the Oregon Food Bank for every pound lost. Says one employee, “We constantly pay it forward, looking for ways to help others.”

Believe it or not, this Portland management consulting company offers its employees no paid vacation time or holidays — and the employees seem to love it. That’s because this company believes so firmly in flexibility that associates get paid only for the time they work, so there is no arbitrary limit to how much time off they can take. “I’ve never worked anywhere that was as committed to helping employees realize what the work-life balance means to them individually,” says one employee.
