No. 2 Medium Company: Microsoft Corp.

Every year Microsoft office cafes recycle 10,000 gallons of cooking grease into biodiesel, and in 2011, the entire company donated $844 million worth of software to nearly 47,000 nonprofits. Here in Oregon, such social and environmental support repeatedly wins kudos from employees. Says one, “We work in a gorgeous office with a beautiful view in a LEED building. We have an annual giving campaign where our money is matched dollar-for-dollar, and organizations we donate time to receive $17 an hour for the time we spend with them. It’s amazing.”

Employees gush about this virtual receptionist company. One calls it “not just an employer, but a life support for our clients as well as our employees.” Another seems absolutely infatuated: “We are all so happy,” she says, “so well cared for, so stimulated and so head over heals in love with the place that we work that we’re this big circle of love and happiness.” The praise doesn’t come without substance. Ruby is known for its supportive and creative atmosphere, its stellar customer service, and encouraging employees in their interests outside of the workplace, whether that be singing in a band or tending to a family.

No. 4 Medium Company: Jibe Consulting

While some companies in this sector place their employees out in the field, far from home, this Portland management and technology consultancy makes every effort to keep its people close to home. And that makes a big difference to many of this firm’s workers. “They work hard to hire and keep people as close to their homes, families and community as possible,” says one. Employees here also like the team atmosphere, the support they receive and the unique way the company gets its business done.
