Questions of leadership

There is a lack of leadership in Oregon across all areas — business, political and civic — according to almost half of the 681 readers surveyed by research firm Conkling Fiskum & McCormick. And the idea of what leadership should be has changed from the traditional top-down hero model to one that is collaborative, inclusive, creative and focused on developing talent. Those surveyed also ranked the quality of political candidates as mostly average. Much has changed in Oregon in the past 30 years, and what we look for in leaders today is no exception. For a deeper discussion of leadership, see Leadership: The new rules (p. 20), a series that launches this month.
