Good times: Employment ads on the increase

Wednesday, March 01, 2006

Since early 2003, employment ads at Oregon newspapers, despite seasonal shifts, have been building steam. The drop in the unemployment rate from above 8% to below 6% during the period could be both a symptom of hiring activity and a hindrance to filling jobs. Compared to the prior year, The Oregonian placed 19% more ads in 2004, and 16% more ads in 2005, while Eugene’s Register-Guard placed 31% and 14% more ads in 2004 and 2005, respectively. This may be part of a regional comeback, as the rate of job openings in Western states has generally surpassed that of the United States overall for the past 20 months. There were 15% more U.S. job openings year-over-year in 2005, but 23% more Western-region openings.
