"To have Enron gone … I feel like a weight has lifted from my shoulders. Sure, there were times when I asked myself if it was really worth it. But I believed we would get to where we are today, and that we would be better. Most people work here because they really like doing something that serves their neighbors. I’ve said that if we’d been a tobacco company, a lot of people would have left, and I’m not sure I would have stayed. But we have a good mission. The people I work with kept me going. The next CEO has to be someone who believes in the team, and since the decisions made today are going to be here for the next 20, 30, 50 years, you can’t think short term. And you’ve got to be able to live with ambiguity. In the early days of electricity, everybody loved the electric company because it brought light and heat and all these wonderful things. But it’s taken for granted now. It would be really nice for people to understand how difficult this business is."
