Power and gas hold steady

Megawatt-hours sold by Portland General Electric increased just 0.9% in 2005 to 18.9 million, while NW Natural sold 1,165 million therms, a 1.8% increase over 2004. State power generation has been fueled increasingly by natural gas: 16.8% of our power portfolio in 2004 compared to only 7.4% in 2000. Hydropower still dominated at 68.9%, but declined from 81.1% in 2000. Other renewables, such as wind power, supplied 3.5% of 2004 power, up from 2.1% in 2000. As of July, a significantly greater share of Oregon electricity went to commercial and industrial customers (66%) compared to the United States as a whole (59%), reflecting mighty hydroelectric resources and a relatively sparse population.

Five years in the making, the Portland Mercado — the city’s first Latino public market — will celebrate its grand opening April 11. A $3.5 million public-private partnership spearheaded by Hacienda CDC, the market will house 15 to 20 businesses in the food, retail and service sectors. It has some big-name funders, including the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation and JPMorgan Chase. The project goals are equally ambitious: to improve cross-cultural understanding, alleviate poverty and spur community economic development.
