Help wanted ads fail to rise with employment

0107Indicators1.gifAfter two year of gains, employment ads placed with Portland’s The Oregonian declined 8.1%, while ads at Eugene’s Register-Guard newspaper rose only 2.1% during the 12 months ended November 2006. While Oregon’s unemployment rate remains among the top 10 in the United States, it fell to 5.1% in October, down from 5.9% in 2005, and the Western region job openings rate, measuring job growth, stayed well above the overall U.S. rate during the last year. Bend’s booming job market helped The Bulletin to post more ads than the Register-Guard during the last 12 months, but we lack data to compare prior years. Increasing use of Internet job sites no doubt continues to negatively impact the number of newspaper ads, but how much is hard to measure.
