Airport traffic gains altitude

Passenger traffic at Portland International Airport has grown more than 5% each year since 2003. Following airline industry turmoil of September 2001,  it finally surpassed the 13.8 million travelers of 2000, with 14.0 million in 2006. Traffic is also up at regional airports: Redmond in Central Oregon saw a 20.4% and 13.9% passenger increase in 2005 and 2006, respectively; Passengers through Medford’s airport increased more than 10% in both 2004 and 2005; and Eugene airport traffic grew 15.1% in 2004, though growth has been more modest since then. Oregon’s air travel gains reflect a national trend since 2003, as U.S. commercial airlines flew 21.3% more passengers in 2004, and 4.6% more in 2005.
