BEAVERTON — Oregon State University electrical engineering duo Robert Batten and Adriaan Smit conjured up a bewitching gadget: a wand that flashes words or images when waved in the air. It hit the market as WavyWand in 2006. But it needed some magic to make it fly off the shelves. In December, WavyWand, which projects sequential images in the air, became an overnight hit after it starred in an HGTV Christmas spot.

“In a matter of three or four days we sold out of the inventory we had and the inventory on its way from China,” says Smit. The $30 wands can be programmed to display just about anything, including “Go Beavers.”
