The plan to annex 100 acres of land in South Beach received final approval from the City of Newport last month. As part of the South Beach Urban Plan, 25 acres are devoted to the new main campus of Oregon Coast Community College. The plan, approved by the state, county and Newport Planning Commission, incorporates a mix of commercial and residential zones and integrates the college into the community. OCCC president Patrick J. O’Conner says the new facility, “will help OCCC do a better job serving the workforce needs of the county.” OCCC will be able to offer classes, such as welding and nursing, it was unable to offer when using rented space. The project, a 65,000-square-foot LEED-certified building, may break ground as early as August.
