Annual weight-mile tax receipts for commercial trucking, reported by Oregon’s Department of Transportation, have held steady at around $250 million during the last few years, although the total for the year ending in May declined 0.1% compared to the prior 12 months. Similarly, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s index of output from for-hire freight carriers — which includes trucking, rail, inland waterways, pipeline and air — declined 1.4% during the same period. Trucking is by far the primary mode of freight traffic. As of 2002, it accounted for 70% of total freight when measured by revenue and 60% when measured by weight. However, rising fuel costs may reduce its dominance down the road.
