LNG plan clears early hurdle in Astoria

ASTORIA NorthernStar Natural Gas cleared a major hurdle on the long regulatory path to building its Bradwood Landing LNG terminal about 20 miles east of Astoria. A preliminary environmental staff report by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission says that a liquid natural gas (LNG) project on the Columbia River could impact the river ecosystem but with the right mitigation, building the contested facility is environmentally acceptable. The report outlined 98 recommendations on handling safety and environmental risks. Bradwood Landing — and four other terminals in Oregon that are at earlier permitting stages — has sparked fierce debate over environmental, safety and economic risks posed by LNG. The public has until Dec. 4 to comment on the report.
