THE COAST Oregon’s pink shrimp fishery received the world’s first sustainable shrimp certification from the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) in early December.
“Oregon’s pink shrimp fishery has achieved a very important milestone in sustainability that will bring international attention to our state,” Gov. Ted Kulongoski said in the announcement. MSC runs the world’s leading independent certification program for sustainable fisheries and used an independent certifier, TAVEL Certification, to conduct the four-year evaluation process. The certification, which is valid for five years before recertification is required, allows Oregon pink shrimp to be sold using the MSC eco-label for sustainable fishing. Only 22 fisheries in the world are certified. There are no other Oregon fisheries certified under the MSC program, but the Pacific halibut fishery, which operates off the coasts of Oregon, Washington, British Columbia and Alaska, and the Oregon Dungeness crab fishery are currently seeking MSC approval.
