At Sparling, a technology engineering and design consulting firm in Portland, leaders have created a "Day On" program that allows employees to volunteer in their communities for one day out of the year and still get paid. It's great philanthropy and also a great team-building when employees volunteer together. "Our long-term goals are clearly communicated, including business and cultural goals," says one employee. "The teamwork this fosters makes it a great place to work." Employees often must work overtime to make sure a project is completed. But the company promotes a healthy work-life balance by paying full overtime to salaried staff who work more than 40 hours in a week. Last fall the company, which has been a 100 Best winner for four years, also began offering on-site life strategies workshops for employees.
