AUGUST 2008: THE STATE WE'RE IN, OREGON EMPLOYMENT
A below-par spring in Tillamook County
Employment in Tillamook County was about 100 jobs below
year-ago levels in early 2008 due largely to weakness in retail
trade and leisure and hospitality. Jobs at local businesses
fell last December after the North Coast was hit by devastating
storms and floods. Employment in retail drifted downward
through May to a spot 60 jobs lower than one year earlier. Jobs
in leisure and hospitality rebounded by 200 from January to May
but remained 70 jobs below last year’s level. Although
Tillamook County may be struggling with a slow travel season,
its local port district may have some help on the way. The Port
of Tillamook Bay agreed to an $8 million cash land sale of 771
acres to The Bunkers Group LLC. The company plans to develop a
$100 million, 250-room upscale golf resort and convention
center on the site and expects to employ about 350 people when
the resort is open. Statewide, golf and country clubs have
gained 860 jobs since
2001.
