FEBRUARY 2008: AROUND THE STATE
Next, but
not last, steps for casino
CASCADE LOCKS
The Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs’ controversial
casino resort project in Cascade Locks was one of eight
off-reservation casino projects in the nation to make it to a
final round of public hearings last month. But issues like the
casino’s distance from Warms Springs and possible traffic
congestion in the Gorge mean the project is far from a sure
thing. The tribe’s current casino — 60 miles north
of Bend — has 317 video gaming machines, and is the
second-smallest of Oregon’s nine tribal casinos. The new
project would have as many as 2,000 — about 30% more than
the state’s largest casino, Spirit Mountain.
