La Grande
Boise Cascade has slowed operations at its sawmill because of a
pokey housing market and falling lumber prices. The effect is
expected to be temporary, even though the mill closed for a
week in October. About 100 workers are affected by the
curtailment. Such actions are natural in the timber industry as
the market fluctuates, according to Shawn Church of Random
Lengths, a forest products industry news service. He says the
industry is just now beginning to adjust to the slowing demand
for housing.
