The Port of Portland expects to receive a new post-Panamax container crane for its Terminal 6 container facility by 2008, with a $7.5 million grant from the Connect Oregon program to cover part of the $12.3 million project budget. The crane will be used to load and unload ships too large to travel through the Panama Canal, a growing segment of the shipping business. The port anticipates that adding a fourth crane to Terminal 6 will save about $10 million in operating costs over the next 10 years.
